THE IB DIPLOMA

 

The IB diploma is, academically, a very demanding and rigorous program. Students study six subjects - three at higher level and three at Standard level. Five of the subjects must be chosen from each of groups 1-5, and the sixth is another subject from the first four groups. In addition, students must participate in a program of Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS); they must follow a course called Theory of Knowledge, as well as produce a 4000-word Extended Essay based on independent primary research in one of the subject areas.

 

The IB diploma package must include the following:

 

• Studies in Language and literature - Language A Literature (for native speakers and language of the school)

• Language Acquisition –Language Acq B (a foreign language), and Language Ab Initio (for beginners, 2 years), 

• Individuals and Societies

• Sciences

• Mathematics 

• The Arts (Visual Arts) / Electives (another Group  3 or 4)

 

Full IB Diploma students must also complete:

 

• a 4000 word independently researched Extended Essay,

• take 100 hours of the Theory of knowledge,

• complete CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) learning outcomes requirements

 

 

IBDP Assessments and Requirements

 

External Assessments

  • Exams taken during May of final year of course

  • Other written and project tasks determined by specific courses

  • Sent to IB examiners around the world to be "externally assessed"

  • Moderated (re-scored) by additional examiners to assure quality control

 

Internal Assessments

  • Assignments and assessment criteria set by the IB

  • Work done over time, giving student added control over quality

  • Works submitted by students and “Internally Assessed” by teacher

  • Samples of assessed work sent to IB for moderation

  • Usually comprised approximately 20-25% of student’s IB grade

 

IB Grade

  • Final IB grade for the course will be determined by combining all internal and external assessment scores (each component comprising a certain percentage of IB grade)

  • IB grades range from 1-7, with “3” considered “passing”

  • Awarding of IB Diploma is contingent upon aggregate of scores from all IB exams.  For specific requirements and contingencies, see Awarding of the IB Diploma.

 

Core Requirements

  • Completion and submission of Extended Essay

  • Completion of all CAS requirements

 

 

AWARDING OF THE DIPLOMA

 

In order for a student to earn the IB Diploma, that student must:

 

  • CAS requirements have been met.

  • The candidate’s total points are 24 or more.

  • There is no “N” awarded for theory of knowledge, the extended essay or for a contributing subject.

  • There is no grade E awarded for theory of knowledge and/or the extended essay.

  • There is no grade 1 awarded in a subject/level.

  • There are no more than two grade 2s awarded (HL or SL).

  • There are no more than three grade 3s or below awarded (HL or SL).

  • The candidate has gained 12 points or more on HL subjects (for candidates who register for four HL subjects, the three highest grades count).

  • The candidate has gained 9 points or more on SL subjects (candidates who register for two SL subjects must gain at least 5 points at SL).

  • The candidate has not received a penalty for academic misconduct from the Final Award Committee.
